Challenging the Myths of the Bursar Role

School Bursar and Ex-RAF Personnel Officer, Caroline Purdom, joins OA Career Consultant, Fiona Jackson, to dispel some of the Myths surrounding the role of a school bursar.

The independent education sector is a popular choice for ex–military personnel but there are still some erroneous preconceptions surrounding this ‘hugely rewarding’ career, where this is ‘never a dull day’.

Caroline Purdom, Bursar at Davenies School, will challenge some of the myths of the sector and look at the transferable skills people can take from the Services into this role – from leadership skills to financial acumen.

Caroline Purdom served 19 years in the RAF as a Personnel Support officer. In her last posting as OC Support Wing at RAF Northolt, she oversaw the redevelopment of the station. In 2011 she left and joined ISS as Head of Communications and Client Relations for the roll out of Catering, Retail and Leisure contract to the RAF. During a ‘Gap Year’ she took a variety of roles including Trustee and Chair positions before joining Davenies School as a Bursar in January 2013.
