The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has recognised a record number of businesses, charities and public sector bodies which have demonstrated outstanding support for the Armed Forces community.
Now in its fifth year, the MOD’s Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Awards are for organisations that have achieved the highest level of support for Service personnel, veterans and military families. They have all signed the Armed Forces Covenant and many engage with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP), and are dedicated to helping Service leavers build new careers. The range of initiatives run by these award-winning organisations include military employment programmes and providing flexible working for Reservists.
Minister for Defence People and Veterans, Tobias Ellwood, said: “The breadth and diversity of this year’s winners show how business support for the Armed Forces continues to flourish. Their commitment is a testament to the fantastic contribution our serving personnel, veterans and their families can make to any organisation.
“We all have a role to play in ensuring that the armed forces community is not disadvantaged by service, and each of these employers is a setting an example as meaningful advocates for those protecting the nation.”
The OA has long championed organisations which recruit former officers. Veterans Work, a collaborative research project led by the OA, Deloitte and Forces in Mind Trust, sets out the compelling business case for hiring veterans: they are loyal employees, have a lower sickness rate, perform well in a team and can work under pressure. They are also problem-solvers and often task-focussed, which is an asset in many roles. 90% of businesses who employ veterans say that they perform well in strategic management and the management and motivation of staff.
Nigel Hare, Director of Operations at the OA, said: “We know through Veterans Work that military is good for business. It’s great that more employers recognise veterans’ invaluable skills, and are actively creating opportunities for them.”
