The OA Benevolence Team has been renamed Grants and Welfare to better reflect what it does.
However, the purpose of the Grants and Welfare Team remains the same – supporting former officers, their families and dependants when faced with challenging times, to help make the pressures more manageable. Last year, the Grants and Welfare Team dealt with 1,107 cases, providing welfare advice, signposting to other organisations and accessing financial support. The OA awarded £1,369,000 in grants during 2016-17.
Nigel Hare, Operations Director at the OA, said: “The Grants and Welfare Team do a fantastic job at supporting our beneficiaries. However, the old name did not represent the full extent of the services we provide. Now everyone will have a clearer understanding of how we can help the officer community.”
Grants are awarded to beneficiaries needing financial support, which can be one-off or regular payments, and quite wide-ranging, depending on the person’s needs. Regular grants can go towards the general cost of living, as well as financing care support. Our one-off payments have covered many costs, including car repairs, funeral costs, rent arrears and white goods. Last year we awarded grants to 668 people, of whom 118 live overseas in 27 different countries.
