Exploring the opportunities and challenges for ex-military personnel and spouses
A new event from veterans' charity, the Officers’ Association (OA), aims to highlight the challenges facing female ex-military personnel when moving from military to civilian employment.
Research* published by the Forces in Mind Trust has highlighted the ‘double whammy’ faced by female Service leavers as they work to move from military to civilian employment:
- They find it hard to describe their skills and experience in a way that makes sense to employers.
- They hold back from applying for roles they should be applying for; they do not meet all the job Specific criteria, childcare issues, lack of confidence and other family commitments.
As a result, the research points to women have a lower employment rate (69%) compared to men (81%) after leaving the Armed Forces.
The event aims to give serving female personnel, veterans and spouses an insight into the support and job opportunities available when looking for their next career in the civilian sector.
OA’s Chief Executive Officer and former Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander, Lee Holloway, states: “Women have skills in abundance to offer employers, and when combined with military training and experience, are exceptionally well placed to contribute to their business success. In bringing employers together with female ex-military candidates we can look at how best to achieve this.”
The event forms part of an on-going campaign by the OA to highlight the skills military personnel possess. Female Service leavers derive equal training and opportunities in the armed forces, but experiences can differ within the civilian employment landscape.
OA’s Director of Employment and former Army Major, Laura Blair, states: “We want to play our part in connecting industry and ex-forces women so that both benefit; our event is a real opportunity to build a network of supportive employers and industry champions.
We can address misconceptions in the recruitment process by hearing directly from employers – Jacobs, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Braze and Balfour Beatty are supporting this event because they recognise the value of recruiting from the military talent pool.”
The event is also supported by the 30% Club, which aims to increase gender diversity at board and senior management levels.
Leonor Stjepic, Chief Executive Officer of Montessori is joined by the Group HR Director of Compass, Sarah Morris and Pavita Cooper, the founder of More Difference, to provide an executive-level overview to attendees. Baroness Martha Lane Fox will provide a recorded address and closing remarks will be delivered by the Minister for Defence, People and Veterans, Johnny Mercer.
Women into Employment: Exploring the opportunities and challenges for ex-forces personnel is open to all ranks and spouses and is free to attend. The virtual event runs from 1000 – 1600 hrs on March 10 2021.
